The Tick Committee oversees the tick remediation program established by the residents of the District. The science behind tick remediation evolves every year and MIFD tries to adapt is tick program to accommodate the latest science. The substances that we apply each year, as well the timing of the applications, may change depending on the latest recommendations by experts. MIFD is in touch with scientists from the State of Connecticut and the University of Rhode Island on a frequent basis.
The program includes a combination of three aspects:
1) Treatment of specific properties by an authorized vendor of approved substances known to eliminate ticks. Each year, each property owner is asked to select one of two approved treatments, a pesticide and an organic treatment.
2) Four deer-feeding stations that apply an approved tick treating chemical onto the neck of a deer when it comes to feed at the station.
3) Treatment of an approved substance in public walking trails and areas.
The effectiveness of the program is monitored each year through a survey that is sent to each resident in the late winter. The survey asks residents to self-report any impact to them, their families and their pets from ticks and tick-borne diseases.
