The Masons Island Fire District (MIFD) is a municipal taxing district in Mystic, Connecticut, and covers the southern portion of Masons Island that is congruent with the Masons Island Property Owners Association (MIPOA). MIFD is primarily responsible for the delivery of fire & emergency medical services for its residents, and in partnership with MIPOA, manages the private roads, stormwater drainage systems and recreational areas within the District. The District includes roads, parks, beaches, hiking trails and other facilities that are maintained and conserved for the exclusive use of MIFD residents and their guests.
As a legal municipal taxing district, membership in MIFD is not voluntary, taxes are levied against all real property owners based on a mil rate established each year. All taxpayers owning property with an assessed value of $1,000 or more, as well as electors of the Town of Stonington residing in the District, are eligible to vote at annual and special meetings
The Masons Island Property Owners Association and the Masons Island Fire District share congruous borders, and both organizations work together to support the needs of our common residents. Membership in MIPOA is voluntary and is open to all owners of real property within the boundaries of MIFD. MIPOA owns the roads within the District along with any supporting structures such as stormwater drains, and MIPOA also owns certain public space land parcels that are available for use by residents. MIFD and MIPOA have a contractual agreement whereby MIFD funds the costs of maintaining the facilities owned by MIPOA through the taxes it collects from property owners. The Allyn family purchased a majority of Masons Island in the early part of the 20th century and formed the Masons Island Company (MICO) to develop and manage their large property holdings. Over the past 100 years, they have sold off individual building lots for residential development. Their last residential building lot within the District was sold in 2025. MICO still owns certain non-residential properties within the District, such as the ice pond (shown in the photo to the left), docks at Allyn's Alley, Plover Lane and East Forest Lane, riparian rights to certain waterfront properties, and small non-developable strips of land. MICO sold their interest in the private roads and associated road infrastructure to MIPOA in 1995. MICO maintains a dedicated Trustee seat on the Board of Trustees of the Masons Island Yacht Club (MIYC), which was granted as a consequence of a grant of certain lands to MIYC.
The Masons Island Yacht Club (MIYC) was formed in 1927 on a parcel of land donated by the Masons Island Company at the southeastern point of Masons Island. It is a private membership organization that allows property owners within the District to apply for Active membership. Thirty Associate memberships are available to individuals and families that do not own property within the District. Non-voting Summer Privilege memberships are available to former Active members, children of current members, children of former Active members, or to individuals that rent a home within the District. For more information on MIYC, please go to www.masonsIslandyachtclub.org.
